A transnational corporation TNC , like Wal-Mart, can have a really big influence on the world economy. The day will come when nations will be judged not by the splendour of their capital cities and public buildings, but by the well being of their peoples. If it weren’t for trade with countries that grow coffee beans, I wouldn’t know what coffee is. You’ve probably heard the term, ‘transnational corporation’ before. For example, I like to drink an occiasonal coffee, but coffee beans do not grow commercially here in Canada. I don’t think so.

Trade definatly has benefits, but there are some down sides to international trade too. We are interacting more becasue we travel more, email more, and trade more. It is completely against the spirit of Christmas to produce ornaments in sweatshop factories where the workers are physically abused and financially cheated. The students also reported to the Labor Bureau that some year-olds worked at the factory. My social textbook defines it as, “a company that is based in one country while developing and manufacturing its products, or delivering its goods and services, in more than one country”. Are the positives greater, in this Wal-Mart case, then the negatives?

We need to get serious about keeping the products of foreign sweatshops off American shelves. Unfortunatly, this often leaves the locals with jobs, but a very low salary and a long work week.
